December 13, 2003Another Way to Prevent Link RotAbout a year ago I wrote an article on how authors and publishers can prevent link rot (the natural decay of links as sites move and disappear) in their published work. Website authors have the opportunity to change links whenever a site moves, but publishers of books and e-books do not have that priviledge. Once a book is out of their hands, it can't be changed. Unless you manage your links with a redirect script. Today I updated my article to include ClickThruStats, a hosted redirect service. To learn more, read the article online or download the PDF (and feel free to pass it around.) More Posts Like This One: eBook Publishing Posted by Barbara J. This is a great idea to save ebook publishers 10,s to 100,s hours of work re distributing ebooks Posted by: neil on October 24, 2006 8:30 AMAutomated link management using redirects is a feature found in many database-driven content management systems. The same technique is used in e-mail newsletter systems that track each clickthrough. If the CMS vendor or e-mail service vendor implements this feature well, it can be very easy to update the destination URL that's stored in the database.
