2012 Resolutions

by on January 2, 2012

Happy New Year! I am both fascinated and appalled by New Year’s resolutions. I do not usually make them, because for the most part I think they are ineffective. On the other hand, I do strive to better myself every year, and am always interested in hearing how others are pursuing their goals.

Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year? Vote in my resolutions poll, and post your resolution as a comment. Robert Cialdini teaches that committing to your goals in public aids in achieving them.

Speaking of success, I am relieved that at the very, very end of 2011, I finally released the new Surfnetkids.com design, which was one of my goals for 2010!

Skip the Antidepressants, Just Bring on the Joe!

by Barbara Feldman September 27, 2011

Good news from the Harvard School of Public Health. Coffee-drinking women reduce their risk of depression with every cup. And women who drink four cups of caffeinated coffee a day, are 20% less likely to suffer from depression. Woo hoo!! Does this make my De’Longhi Espresso maker a deductible medical expense? Ha ha ha!! Read [...]

What I Learned During the Blackout

by Barbara Feldman September 9, 2011

We had a twelve-hour blackout yesterday, along with 1.4 million of our neighbors, that started at 3:30pm. Here are a few of the things I learned. 1) Forget portable radios. What one needs in an emergency is a battery-powered Twitter device. Anyone have one of these? The Twitter updates from @SDGE and from other folks [...]

Greetings from the Trees

by Barbara Feldman August 23, 2011

I am writing to you today from Lake Tahoe. I am here for our family cousins’ week vacation, with fifteen of my brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, children and hubby. It’s a huge party! From most of the rooms of the rental house, we have a view of the trees, as I do now from the [...]

The End of Summer

by Barbara Feldman August 16, 2011

Today as I was driving home after playing tennis, I saw it: the huge tractor trailer parked in an empty lot near my house. Every year it returns, although I swear that each year it arrives earlier and earlier. As I drove past, I thought about the end of summer, the start of school and [...]

Dream Trip to Florence

by Barbara Feldman May 31, 2011

I did it! My dream trip to Florence with my daughter and step-mom was phenomenal! The best part was the way my plan came together with a fabulous rented apartment in the heart of the city and a variety of guided tours spread out every couple of days. I also loved: 1) the day my [...]

Leonardo da Vinci’s Apprenticeship

by Barbara Feldman May 17, 2011

I penned this post in advance, just hours before leaving on my Italian girls getaway. But if all has gone according to our schedule, we took a train to Florence from Rome yesterday, and checked into our apartment in Florence. We are in the Santa Croce area of Florence, in a building that dates back [...]

My Italian Getaway: Eat, Eat, Eat!

by Barbara Feldman May 10, 2011

Did you read the book or see the movie “Eat, Pray, Love” written by Elizabeth Gilbert? I have a few friends who simply hated it, saying that Gilbert has to be the most self-possessed creature ever, but I loved both the book and the movie. And so began this small seed of an idea for [...]

Traffic Jam on the Way to Bed

by Barbara Feldman April 26, 2011

Lasers are such a modern miracle! Not only do they make wonderful cat toys (have you ever played with a cat chasing a laser pointer?) they also perform medical magic. This week I had a tiny hole in my right retina repaired with a laser. Took about 30 seconds, although it seemed like 15 minutes [...]

Math Worksheet Generator and Rainstorms

by Barbara Feldman March 22, 2011

This has been such a great week. My daughter is home from college for spring break, and brought three college friends with her. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t hold up her end of the Sunny Southern California bargain, because instead of sunshine and beach weather, she gave us rain and hail. Not exactly what these east [...]

Jury Duty Reading List

by Barbara Feldman March 8, 2011

Tomorrow, I am going downtown for jury duty. To keep me amused in the waiting room, I’ll have with me my iPod Touch, my laptop, and a hard cover book. Ha ha!!! No one ever accused me of traveling light! For those interested in what I’m reading and listening to at the moment, here’s the [...]
