According to the search-term pundits at Lycos, the search term "Christmas" usually breaks into the top fifty search terms around the first week of August.

This year, however, "Christmas" came one month early. It made its annual debut last week (the week ending June 25) in the #18 spot; meaning that "Christmas" was the eighteenth most popular search term last week.

I'm sure this is significant, but I can't even begin to guess why. And I'm pretty sure I don't like it.

Although I hate talking about Christmas that early, and all the Christmas things in the shops in August, I can share a funny episode of the Christmas fever, too. My friend Barbara from GB visited me in Germany and we talked about foods. She mentioned, she would like to try German Stollen ( a kind of cake which is eaten around Christmas only). Luckily enough, the supermarket already had it on the shelves Aug 8th, and I bought some. So we sat in the garden at 30°C, with the Christmas tablecloth, carols and holly decorations and had a funny Christmas of our lives.

I believe it is because many people celebrate "Christmas in July". Some people have gift exchanges, or begin making their homemade christmas gifts. Some people even begin "gasp" their Christmas shopping. I think I'll start thinking about designing my Christmas cards.. or I can finish the cards I didn't send last year.

Happy Christmas in July!

Actually I do have a theory, it just took a few days for it to gel. I think that it is all the SEO (search engine optimization) guys starting to work on their "Christmas" campaigns, just looking to see where they currently rank.

Hi Barbara, I am not sure why many would be searching for Christmas at this time, but I like to do needlework and I start early. I have already made some of the things I want to do, but I can get some new ideas online. I hope that is all that is happening with the search of Christmas. Susan

I remember when I was a kid, when it got REALLY hot out, say, in August, I used to start reading about snow, and Christmas and all things cooler. Maybe this abnormally hot weather is an explantion.
