I thoroughly enjoyed "Water for Elephants" by Sarah Gruen. It is the story of a young man who accidentally joins a traveling circus in 1931. The descriptions of the life of the performers and animals is fascinating. Those were hard times for everyone. At the end, though, there is an O'Henry-like twist that leaves you smiling and renewed with hope.
Also, I read "Leon and the Champion Chip" by Allen Kurzweil and will be starting "Peter and the Shadow Thieves" by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson - their second collaboration. Their first effort was the wonderful Peter Pan Prequel "Peter and the Star Catchers." I read it aloud to my fourth graders who were riveted by the story. Written with the story crafting and suspense of Pearson and tempered by the wit and whimsy of Dave Barry. I highly recommend it to anyone 8 or older.
