Presidents’ Day and the Apostrophe

by on February 7, 2006

I am writing about Presidents’ Day today, and as I investigated the history of the holiday, I realized it started out as President’s Day (because it honored a single President, George Washington) but then evolved into Presidents’ Day because it became a day commemorating many Presidents.

I also learned that Veterans Day has lost its apostrophe. Isn’t that interesting? For more apostrophe fun, hop on over to The Apostrophe: Possessed and Dispossessed.
