Today is Use Your Fancy Stuff Day

Since my mom moved into an Alzheimer's home, I've been cleaning up her house and organizing her papers. Today I found a really cool set of stainless flatware, still in its original box. A little poking around the Internet, and I learned that the pattern was discontinued in 1996. I remember when she bought them, because she showed them off to me.

But finding the service for six still sealed in the original box made me sad. I hope that I do not become that person that buys pretty things and then puts them away because they are too nice to use.

So I'm declaring today "Use your Fancy Stuff Day!" Dust off the china dishes, get out the fancy dresses. Today we're having a party for no reason at all!

'Nice Stuff' are meant to be enjoyed. We work hard and long hours to acquire crockery, cutlery, etc FOR OUR ENJOYMENT- yet we store it away for better days. I believe we should enjoy the things we have worked for thus I am for using our "nice stuff".

I have a long black beaded evening gown that never sits in the box long, you have to make the occasion, chip the china, it's more interesting that way

About eight years ago I had this idea of using "the fancy stuff". I bought a set of sterling silver when I was 17 yrs. old from a Pots and Pans salesman (remember them?). I got them out polished them and have been using them everyday since then. My girls who are grown and married had never seen them. Nothing is "fancy" anymore at our house.......we use it all and love it. Thanks for reminding us of this idea.

I may not dress for dinner anymore - did during college during the week as it was required in the sorority house - but we use our china and good dishes every day of the year.

I love that idea. Keep in mind, that after you use them again, if they weren't as cool as you remembered them to be, you can decide to let them go.

Maybe a one time use was enough for the memory jar?

I completely agree! Our "nice stuff" is never nice if we don't share it with those who matter more than the nice stuff.
Our "best" also makes others who don't deem themselves worthy of anything special feel valued.

You go, Barbara! This is a pet peeve / irritation of mine. It makes my husband nuts, but I really dislike putting the nice stuff away "for a special occasion" that rarely ever comes. I think I will get out my "good" teapot to celebrate!
