On Valentine's Day I got chocolates from my husband, and perfume from an online buddy. No, my husband wasn't jealous. The perfume was a sampler from a friend who is selling the stuff online, and wanted my opinion.

While we're on the subject of Valentine's Day, here's a little story from my house. In addition to candy for me, my husband also brought candy for our daughter, but nothing for my son. I thought it was a faux pas. If a father is giving Valentine's candy to his daughter, he should also give some to his son.

What do you think? Are sons exempt? Or not?

The Valentine's Day etiquette votes are in and my readers overwhelmingly agree that Valentine's Day is egalitarian. In addition to the votes, here are some comments:

"You are SOOOOOOOOO lucky! I wish I had a website to publicize my husband's 'faux pas!' " A.B.

"If you're his mother, why didn't YOU buy something for your son?" G.B.

"The polling results so far left me a little shocked. Surely boys need to be shown love just as much as girls, and Valentines Day is the time to show it." J.F.

I didn't understand the last one, since J.F. seemed to misunderstand the poll results, but ... oh well!
