Wash and Dry iPod Shuffle

by on September 23, 2007

I guess the title gives away the punchline of this story. But here goes anyway.

I have written before about using my tiny iPod Shuffle for audiobooks from Audible. I just finished the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey, and took the iPod out of my car, and dropped it into my purse so I could reload it with another book (maybe “Good to Great” by Jim Collins?) A few days later, I am looking for the iPod, and it’s not in my purse. I tell my hubby and kids: I’m looking for my iPod. I think it is lost. I put it in my purse, but it’s not there.

Fast forward a few days and just a few minutes ago, I found my Shuffle in the dryer. I hadn’t put it in my purse. I had put it in my pant pocket! My iPod had gone through a complete wash and dry cycle.

The Shuffle didn’t seem to have much of a charge, so I charged it. I sync’ed it. And, holy cow! The darn thing works! How amazing is that?

One more thing, for all you Shuffle owners out there who haven’t yet figured out the light codes, I found this page from Apple that explains them all: Understanding iPod Shuffle’s Status Lights.

My daughter’s shuffle was in her jeans that went accidentaly to a washing machine. We realized this after 10 hours.
Thanks to the various posts in this column I left it in a bowl of rice for two days and after charging it for three hours continuously it came to life. (Earlier when I tried charging it for the first 30 minutes it refused to blink. I almost gave up and started planning for a replacement.) My daughter is elated that all her songs are in tact.
Thanks All for your insights.

I have had my iPod shuffle for about close to 4 years now, I’ve washed it twice, but never dried. The 1st time I washed it I was bummed so I let it sit wrapped in a towel for about 3 months mostly because I forgot about it, and on a whim I decided to charge it to see if it worked. Lo and behold, it charged but all my songs were gone, and my headphones had been ripped apart by the washer. So the 2nd time I washed it was in 2009, I heard a noise in the washer and opened it, my iPod was there. I just sighed at my stupidity and let it sit on my dresser for about 3 weeks, and then when I charged it, it did the same thing, worked but no songs.
So tonight around 10:30 I heard a sound and opened my dryer, and sure enough, there is my cute little iPod, burning hot to the touch. I hope it’ll work in about a week, I’d be sad if it died after all we’ve been through xD Oh yeah, the headphones are, again, ripped apart. I tried to turn on the iPod since it had been in the dryer for a good 25 minutes, but it was a no go. I hope I didn’t ruin it by doing that . . . Oh well, stuff happens I guess. ~sigh~

Tonight. I came over to my moms house and did her laundry. Was being extra nice but not thinking, sister had IPOD in her pocket, don’t know if it was on or off. Realized it had gone through an entire Wash Cycle. Wouldn’t dare turn on. I had a cell phone get wet, no your supposed to let it air dry. So I have it underneath heater and waiting to dig up some Silca packets, or oxygen packets (would this work?, some food comes with those; beef sticks)
I am going to watch it by heater all day, than try silca packets in zip lock bag.
Any other ideas?

Around 3 days ago my mom got mad at me cuz i left my pants laying around my room and decided to wash them. I always check my pockets for money or sumthin before putting my clothes through a wash but my mom did not check my pockets and my new ipod nano 5th gen 16 GB got washed. I got it out before the drying cycle but hasn’t turned on since. After seeing how many people had their ipod working afterwards i think i will try to leave it near a heating vent or somewhere warm.

URGGGH
i hate my shiny BRAND NEW *got it 4 days ago) purple 6TH GENERATION ipod and i put it in my coat and my coat was really dirty, so my mom… well, you know what happens. Well, about 15 minutes into the washing my mom suddenly realized i had left my ipod in my coat pocket. It’s in rice now but since I didn’t lock the screen i’m afraid it might have turned on during the washing, in which case it’s totally fried…. right?
Well, I have no way of knowing so i’ll just cross my fingers for the next 4 days.
P.S. also, the earbuds are in there. idk wht’ll happen to them.
